Geography
Vancouver Island stretches southeast to northwest along the
south-western coast of British Columbia. The majority of the
population is concentrated around Victoria, British Columbia's
capitol city, on the southern end of the island. The west coast,
north of the beaches at Tofino, is largely inaccessible by
road and punctuated with
deep fjords between high mountains with a few small communities located
on the shores of protected inlets. The eastern plain which slopes gently toward
the island's backbone, the Beaufort Mountain Range, is rich with timber,
farmlands, lakes and streams, and scattered with small towns an cities.
